🌺 Conventional sanitary pads and tampons are made up of a combination of 90% plastic materials, wood pulp, cotton and rayon. BUT! Sniff your conventional sanitary pads and tampons - watch out for that sweet horrible chemical smell. Most of us (we can assume!) doesn't even know what GOES INTO these disposable products. In most countries, there is no legal law for manufacturers to disclose what goes into these menstrual disposables.
🌺 Tampons applicators (and its string) are made of polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) and are discarded as single use that ends up in landfills.
🌺 Conventional menstrual products are not classified as 'sterile' (in the UK) despite the layers of plastic packaging. 
🌺 1.5-2 billion of menstrual products has been flushed down into (British) toilets, ending up in the seas and washed up on beaches. Otherwise, they are incinerated or thrown into landfills. This is the same issues for most countries including Hong Kong.
🌺 'Microplastics in our oceans?? From our disposable menstrual products??' Yes, you read that right. The breakdown of plastic products become micro-sized plastic pellets (less than 5mm) which are mistaken as food by marine life. Most are from polymer based clothing material and cosmetics products (e.g, micro-beads face wash!). This doesn't exclude single-use menstrual products. It all goes into the same landfills and oceans.
🌺 Reuseable menstrual products aren't a new 'revolution'. We've had DIY cloth pads before bigger (male owned) brands took over with conventional menstrual products with bigger marketing budgets to 'enforce' womxn / hoomans that these were better for us. These 'cheap options' makes it a social and environmental justice issue. People with low incomes and buying power are forced to use these dangerous products in their bodies.
